Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Her grandmother raised her and she was a sole child. Scott completed her studies at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. While working two jobs and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. Her goal was to be a teacher of English at a secondary school. After three years of being an aide to the teacher and a student the possibility of becoming a high school English teacher came to a halt. After starting her career doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate and co-writing You Got Me. Then, during Roots' show she showed herself as an artist. After that, she secured collaborations with stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to learn about the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
